Blackpool FC's Lomana LuaLua takes challenging questions from young people at Bloomfield Road Stadium
Lomana LuaLua is an Honorary Patron of Show Racism the Red Card and a longstanding supporter of our campaign. On 6th December 2011 he took part in our educational event at Bloomfield Road, sharing experiences of racism and giving his advice to local school children.
Young people from Boundary, St Kentigerns, Baines Endowed, Thames and Revoe Primary Schools took part in an afternoon of anti-racism activities led by Show Racism the Red Card Campaign Workers Gav Sutherland and Jo Wallis.
The young people engaged with interactive activities, stories and games. They were encouraged to explore the dangers of stereotyping people, discussed a definition of racism and considered the role they can play in helping to stop racism. The group then viewed a screening of Show Racism the Red Card's Educational DVD featuring top footballers talking about their experiences of racism and giving advice to young people for how to combat racism wherever and whenever it occurs.
The educational workshop and film screened fuelled some fantastic questions which the young people posed to Blackpool FC's Lomana LuaLua. He was asked whether he had ever done anything to try and stop racism? His answer: "Yes - I'm doing it now!" By talking to the young people and sharing his experiences of racism, Lomana believes he can empower the audience to recognise and challenge racism whenever they see it. His advice was to always speak to a teacher or responsible adult if they encounter racism. He believes that together, we can overcome racism.
Well done to Lewis, Shalika and Esme who received prizes for the questions that they asked. All young people left with a signed Blackpool FC poster and a goody bag.
Lomana was interviewed by Tangerine Player following the event, please check out the footage!
Show Racism the Red Card would like to thank Lomana LuaLua for helping to share our anti-racism message. Huge thanks John Rodgers and the staff at Blackpool FC for their support. We look forward to returning to the club next season.
