Pupils from Royal Mile Primary school joined friends and patrons of Show Racism the Red Card to help launch a new two year partnership between the educational charity and the City of Edinburgh Council.
Comedians Gavin Webster, Ava Vidal and Patrick Monahan took time out from performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to promote the partnership alongside football legends Gary McKay (Hearts FC) and Michael Weir (Hibs FC).
Ged Grebby, Chief Executive of Show Racism the Red Card and Bill Butler, new Campaign Manager for Show Racism the Red Card in Scotland, joined City Education Leader Councillor Marilyne MacLaren, Convenor of Children and Families at City of Edinburgh Council to celebrate this positive new deal between the city council and the anti-racism charity.
This partnership will see Show Racism the Red Card’s Community Education team and current and ex-professional football coaches visiting Edinburgh schools over the next two years and delivering important educational workshops on the subjects of anti-racism and anti-sectarianism.
Cllr Marilyne MacLaren said "Increasing diversity within our schools is having a fantastic impact on the culture of Edinburgh, helping young people to learn more about the world and contributing to the vibrancy of our city.
"Show Racism the Red Card supports the work of schools and they help to broaden understanding and increase skills to help end racism and sectarianism. We are delighted to be working with them again as we drive to wipe out racism in our communities."
Bill Butler, Campaign Manager for Show Racism the Red Card in Scotland said, “We are truly excited to be working in Partnership with City of Edinburgh Council again in this our 15th anniversary year. We know that schools are supported by the local authority to promote equality and diversity. The dangers of racism and sectarianism are significant and education is vital in order that our children can recognise these and other forms of discrimination and be equipped to challenge them as they grow and develop.”
