Primary seven pupils from Strathallan and Dunnikier Primary Schools attended Starks Park on Thuesday 5th May 2011 for a Show Racism the Red Card Event.
The event included a screening of Show Racism the Red Card’s anti-racism educational film, which features some of the game’s greatest players; Thierry Henry, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Didier Drogba.
A selection of Raith Rovers FC first team players, ex professionals Derek Ferguson and Michael Weir were present on the day to talk about their experiences of racism and offer advice on how to deal with, and combat, racism whenever it occurs. Councillor Gerry McMullen and Brian Kirkaldy – Head of Education for Fife Council, also attended the event, speaking to the young people about racism.
Amanda Peebles, Show Racism the Red Card, said:
“These kinds of workshops are a great way of engaging young people with our anti-racism message and equipping them to deal with racist attitudes and behaviours. Schools in the area are very keen to engage with the campaign and the young people we have worked with are very positive about it."
“The support of current and former professional footballers and managers for these events is having a tremendously positive impact on the young people attending.”
