Over 100 young people from Denard, Ruchill, St Charles, St Josephs and Westercommon Primary Schools attended Firhill Stadium on Thursday 17th February 2011 for a Show Racism the Red Card Event.
The primary seven pupils had the opportunity to take part in an afternoon of enjoyable and educational activities. During the afternoon they watched Show Racism the Red Card’s film, which features some of the game’s greatest players; Thierry Henry, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Didier Drogba. They all talk about their experiences of racism and offer advice on how to deal with, and combat, racism whenever it occurs.
A selection of first team Partick Thistle players, including Paul Cairney, Martin Grehan and Patrick Boyle, joined the panel, along with former professional footballer Gary MacKay, to answer questions on racism posed by the local school pupils at the event.
Ged Grebby, Show Racism the Red Card’s Chief Executive, said:
“SRtRC have been lucky enough to work with Partick Thistle FC for many years now on these educational events and the young people who attend from Primary Schools throughout the area really look forward to the day.”
“This kind of event is ideal for addressing the subject of racism, thanks to the club we have been able to organise an event that is both educational and fun. We are confident that the anti-racist message presented on the day will further illustrate the club’s commitment to tackling racism through education and will help show young people from the area that there is no room for racism in football or in society.”
“The support of current and former professional footballers and managers for these events is having a tremendously positive impact on the young people attending.”
