Regional Supporters Event at Spartans FC
Thursday 18th November marked the second anti-sectarian Regional Event with adult football fans in the east of the country. The event was held in Edinburgh at Spartans Community Football Academy, a club with a long-standing tradition of supporting all Show Racism the Red Card initiatives in Scotland.
Our guests had the opportunity to provide feedback on the ‘Rivals not Enemies’ DVD and to engage in a meaningful and energetic debate with our very special panel of football personalities, including local legends Gary MacKay and Michael Weir, as well as Derek Ferguson. We were also delighted to be joined in the audience by a colleague from Northern Ireland, Michael Boyd, who is the Head of Community Relations at the Irish Football Association.
Michael Boyd said: “It was a great trip and a very impressive anti-sectarian workshop. I was delighted to participate and look forward to working in partnership with Show Racism the Red Card to develop initiatives in Belfast which support the Show Bigotry the Red Card message and support our own anti-sectarian Football for All Project”.
Elio Ajmone, Project Manager for Show Bigotry the Red Card, said: “It was really encouraging to witness such a positive participation from the audience and for us to receive many a suggestions on how to move forward in challenging sectarian and bigoted attitudes within football and society. This event also confirmed that sectarianism is a very relevant issue beyond Glasgow and the West of Scotland.
The educational material that we have produced helps stimulating debate and having football personalities in the panel sharing their honest and positive messages with the audiences is certainly an invaluable benefit for the campaign. The next gathering is due to take place in Dundee in February 2011 and I would ask anyone interested in coming along to watch this space for further details or to get in touch by writing to:
