World Cup Poster Launch and Educational Event at Villa Park
Over 150 young people from seven local schools came to the Holte Suite at Villa Park to take part in the ninth Show Racism the Red Card England World Cup Poster Launch and educational event. The interest is from schools in Birmingham for this event was such that double this number of pupils could have attended had we the capacity!
SRtRC had arranged for an hour of educational activities with a positive multi-cultural and World Cup theme to be facilitated by coach, education worker and former professional footballer Leroy Rosenior. The schools participated readily and it was an excellent session. Following the activites the second hour saw a screening of the SRtRC DVD followed by a question and answer session with former professional footballers; Dave Bennett, Christian Roberts, Leroy Rosenior and former Villa and England player Mark Walters.
The DVD was well received and there were some excellent questions for the panel to answer, which they did admirably. SRtRC provided some prizes for the young people who asked the panel’s favourite questions of the day, SRtRC T-Shirts and gym bags. In addition to the activities on the day, young people were able to pick copies of the SRtRC England poster to take away with them. The panellists were happy to sign posters for the young people at the end of the event.
A special exhibition of information about Gypsy, Roma and Travellers, including pieces from the SRtRC education pack ‘Out of Site’, was on display in the Holte Suite, thanks to supporter of the campaign Paul Powell of Barnardos. There are many activities going on throughout June in the area to celebrate GRT awareness month and Paul has been instrumental in promoting this programme in the Midlands.
SRtRC would like to thank Aston Villa FC for hosting the event, particularly Lee Preece, Claire Peakman and Tina Smith for all their help in organising the day. We would also like to thank Aston Villa’s media department for filming the event and we look forward to sharing this footage with you soon. Big thanks also to the panellists and all of the schools for participating in a very enjoyable event.
