Show Racism the Red Card returned to the Keepmoat Stadium for this event, supported by Doncaster Rovers and Doncaster Rovers Community Sports Trust and sponsored by Doncaster Council.
Around 100 young people from local primary schools attended the Lakeside Suite to take part in a 2-hour programme that took in educational activities run by SRtRC staff, followed by a screening of the SRtRC film and a Q&A on racism featuring panellists from the football club and the council.
The day was officially introduced and the audience welcomed by Councillor Andrea Milner, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, Equality and Cohesion. The young people then participated readily in the educational session that followed and the issues raised provided lots of food for thought for the Q&A later in the event.
The DVD was screened after a short break and the young people were encouraged to think of some good questions on racism for the panel, which included Doncaster Rovers players James Chambers and Jimmy O’Connor and Cllr. Milner. All of the panellists handled the questions very well and there were plenty of questions.
The audience had the opportunity of winning some great prizes. Doncaster Rovers FC had donated both a match ball, which the players signed and a home shirt signed by the squad. SRtRC had some T-Shirts to give away for the runners-up and Doncaster Council purchased 6 pairs of match tickets to give-away.
When the Q&A session finished and the panellists had chosen their favourite questions, all of the winners were invited to the top table to receive their prizes and then taken pitch-side to have some press shots taken with the panel.
Both James and Jimmy were happy to sign autographs on the new SRtRC / Doncaster Rovers FC posters after the photos, for all of the audience. All of the young people who attended were able to take away a SRtRC goody bag with them.
Show Racism the Red Card would like to thank all who attended and participated in this very enjoyable event. Big thanks are owed to Richard, Wayne and Eric of the Doncaster Rovers Community Sports Trust and Julian Cotton of Doncaster Council for their help in organising the event.
SRtRC look forward to more work in the area in the future.
