Show Racism the Red Card travelled to Barnsley for our first ever event at Oakwell, sponsored by Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.
117 schoolchildren came along to the Legends Suite from local primary schools to take part in a Question and Answer session on the issue of racism with a distinguished panel of guests:
Councillor Ken Sanderson – Deputy Mayor of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.
Maxwell Senior - Principal Hate and Hidden Crime Officer, Barnsley Community Safety Service.
Darren Moore – Ex-Portsmouth, West Brom, Derby County and current Barnsley FC central defender.
Luke Steele – Ex-Manchester United, Peterborough and current Barnsley FC Goalkeeper.
Davit Khutsishvili – Former Georgian professional footballer and General Manager and founder of Barnsley International Football Club.
Craig Bankhead, Community Education Manager for SRtRC facilitated an excellent anti-racist workshop with the young people before the audience were shown the latest Show Racism the Red Card film featuring Thierry Henry, Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs.
The film was very well received and provided a good starting point for the questions that followed. The panel responded well to a mix of interesting and thoughtful questions and the three lucky winners of the best questions received SRtRC T-Shirts signed by the panel and match tickets very generously donated by the club.
Barnsley goakeeper David Preece also came along towards the end of the event to sign autographs for the young people.
All of the young people who attended received SRtRC goody bags containing an SRtRC magazine and wristband.
Show Racism the Red Card would like to thank all of the panel for taking part and the schools for attending what was a great event.
Big thanks also to Rachel Hearne at Barnsley FC and particularly Maxwell Senior for helping to organise the afternoon and his longstanding support for our campaign.
