Show Racism the Red Card has received funding to organise four regional teacher training conferences to be held between November 2009 and March 2010 and nine regional teacher training conferences to be held between April 2010 and March 2011.
The aims of the conferences are:
a. To raise awareness amongst teachers of issues of racism and how these impact on young people.
b. To empower teachers with knowledge to recognise racism and challenge racist myths
c. To encourage teachers to be reflective in their work and consider race equality in their lesson planning and delivery.
d. To equip teachers with knowledge and resources to educate young people against racism in the classroom
Location: The conferences will be held at football clubs. The initial choice of venues for the first four conferences (tbc) is MK Dons, Derby, Middlesbrough and Everton.
Audience: Each Conference will be for 100 Teachers. The conferences will be free of charge for the participants.
Format of Each Day: Participants will participate in a carousel of workshops in the morning exploring different aspects of the issue. During the afternoon participants will be brought together to watch films on the issue and listen to key speakers
During the lunch period there will be flip charts around the room with questions such as:
· What are the barriers to dealing with racism and promoting race equality in the classroom?
· What particular issues have you encountered with the young people that you work with?
· What would be your concerns about educating against racism with young people?
· What support would you need?
Participants will be encouraged to use post-it notes to stick their responses on to the flip-chart paper. At the end of the day these concerns will be addressed in a plenary panel session.
Resources: Participants will leave with a goody bag of resources to enable them to work with young people on these issues.
Partnership Organisations: Show Racism the Red Card will work in partnership with other organisations to deliver these training days.
Research: We will use evidence collected during these conferences to inform research into the barriers teachers face in tackling race inequalities in the classroom.
