Show Racism the RED Card had their first club event this season in Wales with Welsh Premier league 2008 champions Llanelli AFC.
The event, at Stebonheath Park was attended by school children from Ysgol Gymraeg Dewi Sant and Stebonheath.
Heading the panel was Wales project coordinator Sunil Patel and honorary SRTRC patron Leroy Rosenior. Representatives from the club was former Welsh international Mat Jones and Garry Lloyd who won championship medals last season with Llanelli. The players were joined by current Llanelli AFC manager Peter Nicholas who is also a former welsh international, Arsenal and Chelsea player. Kay Hughes completed the panel representing Mayreau.
The children asked the panel questions on racism in football and in society and how to deal with racism if they or anyone experienced it. The panel gave responses putting across the anti racism message to the many questions provided by pupils and explaining to the children the reasons why such behaviour is wrong and what the children can do to stop it.
Some of the points made by the panel included how players learn about different cultures through football and how racism is more common in other parts of Europe as highlighted on our DVD.
Prizes, which included match tickets to a Llanelli home game at Stebonheath Park, were given out by the Llanelli AFC players and Manager to the pupils that asked the best questions
The event was a huge success with the children leaving with positive messages and having enjoyed the occasion. The event also had coverage on the S4C news channel.
SRTRC would like to thank the staff and children of Ysgol Gymraeg Dewi Sant and Stebonheath School’s as well as everyone at Llanelli AFC.
