Show Racism the Red Card will work with local authorities across Scotland to deliver anti-racism educational programmes within communities to assist in disseminating education aimed to counter anti-immigration sentiment and promote community cohesion.
Show Racism the Red Card is delighted that the expertise of our Community Education team in delivering transformative anti-racism education is being utilised to support local authorities who are providing a safe place for Syrian refugee families
Scottish local authorities have been united in welcoming Syrian refugees in line with the Scottish Governments pledge in September based on international human rights conventions. One such authority, Perth and Kinross which Show Racism the Red Card have a long standing relationship, approached SRtRC in September 2015 to enquire if we could assist in developing an educational initiative to disseminate the authorities’ strong stance of supporting those affected by war and human rights abuses. Perth and Kinross wish to build on the positive way in which the local communities, statutory community services and local media have framed the resettlement of Syrian Refugee families in the area. However, the authority is mindful that damaging and divisive reporting in the national media on the issue of immigration can create myths and untruths about immigrant communities which may result in fear and resentment among the settled communities. Education is a key factor in reducing these symptoms of misinformation which, if left untreated can turn into prejudicial thought that can result in discriminatory action towards diverse communities. Show Racism the Red Card is expert in this type of transformative education with young people and adults alike. The Red Card will begin delivering a programme with two schools in Perth and Kinross commencing December 2015.
