The last five years have seen an alarming rise in racism in society which now is having a deep and troubling effect in football, and in particular at the grass roots level. Everyone from Chelsea Chairman Bruce Buck to John Barnes agree that education is the key to solving racism.
Show Racism The Red Card, the UK’s leading anti-racism charity, has always employed education as its driver for change. As a founding member of SRTRC we set about our efforts at making an impact with the simple belief that football clubs have a duty to their communities, and that football can and should lead in making those communities better and stronger.
I am again calling on the Premier League and each club to lead when and where their communities and the game needs them most. Given the growth of the game and the continued impact that clubs have in their communities surely each club can give £100,000 towards an anti-racism campaign with a proven track record over 23 years.
When we all lead, we all win.
