Teachers of Tomorrow conference - Newport

On Friday 20th April, the Wales Team visited the University of South Wales’ Newport campus to deliver a teacher training conference to final year students.

Informative presentations on immigration, terminology and handling racism in the classroom were delivered over the course of the day. The students were also briefed on reporting procedures in relation to racial incidents and were encouraged to put these into action through some hypothetical case studies.

The conference was an opportunity for Show Racism the Red Card to demonstrate the activities that are included in our school workshops. These soon-to-be teachers were encouraged to play the games from the workshops- either answering as themselves or how they imagined their pupils would.

Through these activities, the team stressed that it was okay if the students felt unsure about how to handle certain circumstances, that was the whole reason why Show Racism the Red Card was there. It was also made clear that the support they received from SRtRC would exist beyond the one day conference.

All of the students were given practical resources to use in the classroom. In addition to this, they were offered tips to engage their pupils on the topic indirectly.

We would like to thank the NUT for their support for this project that has enabled us to deliver to hundreds of student teachers in Wales.
