Show Racism the Red Card Scotland is delighted to announce that our annual Fortnight of Action will be sponsored by the UK’s largest Trade Union Unite the Union. The funds that Unite the Union provide will help us engage with the public and send a strong message that racism is not acceptable in Scotland. We will be joining forces with SPFL Clubs, SWPL and SWFL clubs as well as junior clubs and grassroots clubs.
Last year our Fortnight of Action helped us get our message out to 114,926 football fans.
We would like to thank Unite the Union for their continued support without which we would not be able to continue to educate and raise awareness about our anti-racism work.
Unite Scottish secretary Pat Rafferty said: At the time of the last World Cup FIFA ran a marvellous advert for football. I can’t remember the actual details but it went something like this. Two supporters are sitting in a train opposite each other - one has a Spanish strip on and the other a German strip. They are not talking.
Then the Spanish supporter says “ Beckenbauer”. The German replies “Di Stefano.” Then it continues “Schweinstagger” “Iniesta”. Then “Lamm” and “Messi”. And so on. In that snapshot you have captured the wonderful collectivity of football - the way at it’s best football produces a wonderful unity among its fans. And often well beyond the game.
That’s why the beautiful game should never be tainted by the foul spectre of racism and the divisions it promotes. So Unite is proud to support the fantastic work of Show Racism the Red Card Scotland, and we look forward to helping the Fortnight of Action, spreading a message of respect and humanity throughout Scotland.”
