Last week saw the wonderfully successful Scottish launch of Leroy Rosenior’s ‘It’s Only Banter’ book at an event organised by GMB Glasgow General Apex Branch and Show Racism the Red Card.
The night saw great talks delivered by the first black STUC President Satnam Ner and by SRtRC Campaign Manager Nicola Hay speaking of the increase in racism in Scottish schools. Leroy was so engaging and gave a passionate and thought-provoking talk on his experiences of racism in football, and was then interviewed by Gary Smith (Scottish Secretary, GMB), taking questions from the audience. Gary had previously worked with and knows Leroy through the Show Racism the Red Card campaign.
There was not an empty seat in the house, with all feedback being positive with various communities members looking to see how they can engage with SRtRC and stand in solidarity against racism.
Thanks so much to Tommy Breslin, Development Officer at Scottish Union Learning, and Gary Smith for their help in bringing this event to life, as well as to United Glasgow FC for their continued support and to Kevin Buchanan for the amazing photographs he took on the evening.
‘It’s Only Banter’ explores three generations of the Rosenior family. An eccentric father who dealt with violent racism with grace and grit; of a son who learned that keeping your head down was the only option for a black player in English professional football in the 1980s; and his son Liam, who looked out for the ‘underdogs’ and has followed his father into football and carved out a successful Premier League career.
