UNISON Conference 2017

Show Racism the Red Card held a fringe event at this year’s UNISON Conference in Brighton on Tuesday 20th June.

The meeting was entitled ‘Racism on the rise, Education is the answer’ and featured a wonderful panel of guest speakers:

Liam Rosenior, professional footballer, Brighton & Hove Albion FC

Christine Blower, Vice President, SRtRC

Margaret Greer, National Officer, Race Equality, UNISON

Clare Williams, Northern Regional Secretary, UNISON

Elizabeth Cameron, Black Members Committee, UNISON

Stephen Cavalier, Chief Executive, Thompsons Solicitors

The meeting was chaired by Ged Grebby, Chief Executive, Show Racism the Red Card who sent in this report from the event

“The meeting at UNISON Conference was a massive success. A packed room of conference delegates heard strong anti-racism messages from the panel of speakers.

“Clare Williams, UNISON Northern Regional Secretary opened the meeting by explaining how UNISON branches can get involved in the campaign’s educational work. Liam Rosenior then gave a passionate account of the need to educate young people about racism.

“SRtRC Honorary Vice President, Christine Blower, thanked UNISON and the National Union of Teachers for both unions outstanding support of the campaign. Margaret Greer and Elizabeth Cameron both spoke about the need to stand together after the recent terrorist attacks in London and Manchester.

“Aman Ali from MEND and Stephen Cavalier from sponsors Thompsons Solicitors made excellent speeches about the need for unity after recent rises in levels of racism and Islamophobia.

“I would like to express thanks on behalf of all at SRtRC to UNISON for 21 years of support and of course to all of the speakers and Thompsons Solicitors for sponsoring the meeting.”
