Wear Red Day is a national day of action which encourages schools, businesses & individuals to wear red and donate £1 to help facilitate the delivery of anti-racism education for young people & adults throughout Scotland, England & Wales. For just £5, SRtRC can educate one child for a whole day.
On Friday 26th May Show Racism the Red Card launched Wear Red Day 2017 in the GMB offices in Glasgow city centre. The event was attended by Alex McLeish, former Rangers FC and Scotland Manager, Craig Brown, former Aberdeen FC and Scotland Manager, Anas Sarwar MSP (Labour), Chris Stephens MP (SNP), Jennifer Layden (SNP Councillor), Bill Butler (Labour Councillor), Pauline McNeil MSP (Labour) & Eileen Dinning, Equality Officer at Unison. They were joined by staff from the GMB and former football players and SRtRC coaches, Derek Ferguson, Gary McSweggan & Michael Weir.
Nicola Hay, Scottish Campaign Manager said:
“Wear Red Day is a wonderful chance for people across the country to help raise much needed funds for anti-racism education work. Friday the 6th of October 2017 is all about standing is solidarity against racism by wearing something Red and donating £1.”
“We know through our data collection that there has been a 19% increase in young people experiencing racism since June 2016. That means that 37% of our current sample of young people have experienced racism. We also know that 65% of those young people found the experience extremely stressful or stressful.”
“We believe that education is key in challenging racism in society. By working with the next generation in schools we can have a big impact towards eradicating racism and creating a Better Scotland for All.”
SRtRC would like to thank all of those who have shown support for Wear Red Day and for the wider campaign. In order to continue the essential work of discussing racism in a safe & non-judgmental environment and providing an opportunity to educate about the dangers of racism, initiatives like Wear Red Day have never been more important and SRtRC would encourage everyone to get involved in whatever way they are able.
