SRtRC worked with Southampton FC and Saints Foundation on February 2nd to mark the start of the club’s new ‘One March’ campaign, which celebrates Southampton FC’s commitment to the promotion of equality, inclusion and diversity across everything it does.
One March was officially publicly launched at the Southampton FC v West Ham United FC game on Saturday 9th and will include initiatives and activities at the club throughout the year.
The first of which was an educational event with SRtRC for young people from local schools, some of whom will be involved in a project with the club to talk to other young people about Hate Crime.
Saints captain Steve Davis was able to attend and answer young people’s questions about racism, which was brilliant. Participants had also taken part in a SRtRC workshop that explored stereotypes and racism and seen a screening of the SRtRC film.
There were some excellent questions about Steve’s experiences of racism and he was happy to share his advice with young people about what to do if they experience racism. The questions were very good and SRtRC provided mini-footballs and t-shirts for the most interesting questions of the afternoon and Southampton FC made sure that there were some pairs of tickets for the One March for the lucky winners. All of the young people in attendance were able to leave with a SRtRC goody bag, which included materials from the club and Saints Foundation and a copy of the new Southampton FC / SRtRC poster signed by Steve Davis.
The event in the afternoon followed a training session delivered by SRtRC for Saints Foundation staff, focussing on the delivery of educational work about equality and diversity. The staff members will be involved in the project Saints Foundation are running with young people to educate about Hate Crime. SRtRC will bring you an update about this project in the future.
Many thanks to Saints Foundation and Southampton FC for their ongoing support and for hosting the event, to the young people who attended and of course, to Steve Davis for giving up his time to take part in the event. We look forward to future work with Southampton FC.
