Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) hosted a joint fringe meeting with Stand Up To Racism at the National Union of Teacher's (NUT) Annual Conference this year in Cardiff. The fringe meeting, entitled 'Challenging Racism in School and Wider Society' took place on Monday 17th April between 12:45 and 13:45 in the Castle Suite at the Hilton Hotel.
SRtRC's North East Education Team Manager Laura Pidcock spoke alongside NUT General Secretary Kevin Courtney, while SRtRC Vice President and former NUT General Secretary Christine Blower chaired the meeting. Our thanks go to Joint Secretary of Unite Against Facism (UAF), Weyman Bennett, as well as Daniel Kebede, an anti-racism activist and NUT member and Shabby Dhalu, Joint Secretary of Stand Up To Racism who also gave inspirational speeches at the meeting.
Christine Blower commented,
"I was delighted to chair it and to welcome the NUT President, Louise Regan as well as NUT General Secretary, Kevin Courtney. Both spoke of the Union's commitment to SRtRC and the huge success of the school competition in England and in Wales.
Laura Pidcock gave an excellent description of the work done by the education teams as well as the political background which makes the work more important than ever.
The number of speakers left no time for a Q and A but the audience all left with a determination to get anti racist education higher up the agenda in their schools. I am expecting enquiries to come in from many of those present as lots of delegates intend to support wear red day in their schools.
Whilst it is depressingly true that all forms of racism and prejudice based behaviour and violence are still all too prevalent,it was clear from the meeting and debates elsewhere that there is an absolute determination in the NUT to work with SRtRC to challenge it wherever it happens."
SRtRC would like to extend our sincere thanks all the delegates who attended the Fringe meeting and held up the SRtRC iconic red cards in support of Wear Red Day 2017 (#WRD17) which takes place on Friday 20th October.
