On Monday 23rd May 2016, Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) partnered with Millwall Football Club to host a Charity Football Match between Members of Parliament and ex-professional footballers. The football match was just one of numerous events organised by SRtRC throughout 2016 to celebrate the campaigns 20th Anniversary.
Both teams arrived at The Den, home of Millwall F.C, at 11:00am where they would get a chance to see who they would be competing against. The team of MP’s who were to be coached by the legendary manager Lawrie McMenemy included a number of Politicians from a cross-section of parties. The MP’s taking part included Chris Green MP, Clive Betts MP, Clive Efford MP, David Burrowes MP, Graham Evans MP, Ian Murray MP, Scott Mann MP, Stephen Hepburn MP, Owen Thompson MP, Neil Gray MP, Stephen Kinnock MP and Justin Madders MP. The team of ex-professionals who were being led by player/coach Terry Angus included the likes of Jason Lee, Marcus Gayle, Gifton Noel-Williams, Chris Moore, Anwar Uddin, Ritchie Humphreys and DJ Spoony.
After a brief warm-up the officials (who had been provided by the Football Association) got the game underway. The game was played in a competitive but friendly manner and it had its fair share of drama. Neil Gray MP for Airdrie and Shotts failed to convert from the spot for the team of MP’s but later went on to get on the scoresheet. Ritchie Humphreys, PFA Chairman, grabbed the goal of the day when his long-range effort with the outside of his foot hit the back of the net in the second-half. Overall the ex-professionals finished with a comfortable 6-2 over the team of MP’s. Terry Angus was presented the winning trophy by Len McCluskey, General Secretary Unite the Union, Stephen Cavalier, Chief Executive of Thompsons Solicitors and Nazir Razak.
Show Racism the Red Card would like to say a massive thank you to Millwall F.C for their continued support of the campaign, and a special thank you to Mark Cole for all his help in organising the event. Thank you to the team of MP’s for taking the time out of their day to attend and participate in the match, and a special thank you to Emily James at the FA for all her help in organising this. The campaign would like to thank the team of ex-professionals for taking part in the match, but also for their continued support of the campaign over the last 20-years. And finally, a big thank you to all the guests that came down to show their support for the Charity Football Match and the campaign.
