Show Racism the Red Card visited grassroots club Rossvale Juniors Girls on three occasions recently
Show Racism the Red Card visited grassroots club Rossvale Juniors Girls on three occasions between August and September. Roughly 20 young football players attended these sessions from different age groups ranging from 9 years old to 13 years old.
The three sessions were funded by the Scottish Government community safety unit, and set up to educate the young people on sectarianism and its effect on society, whilst also exploring the importance of respect and inclusion. The workshops allowed the young people to explore their views and knowledge of sectarianism in a safe and controlled environment.
The young people took part in a number of different exercises and activities which were led by Show Racism the Red Card Education Worker Gillian Eunson. The workshops are designed to challenge and educate the minds of the young people and encourage them to think about sectarianism and the way it can have an effect on peoples’ lives.
Show Racism the Red Card’s ex-professional players, Derek Ferguson and Michael Weir led coaching sessions with the young people, reiterating the importance of respect and introducing the importance of good communication and listening skills. Derek and Michael focussed their sessions on activities and drills that required the girls to exercise these skills in order for them to be a success.
Show Racism the Red Card would like to thank the girls and coach Michael McKenna for their commitment to the campaign. SRtRC Education Worker Gillian Eunson said that “Rossvale Juniors Girls were eager and willing to strengthen their team spirit of respect throughout each session, and have demonstrated that there is no place for Sectarianism or Bigotry within their team”. Michael commented that the sessions were delivered in an “excellent” way that “made the girls aware of a serious issue”.
We look forward to seeing their actions at our fortnight of action in October, when they will be able to replicate the actions of all professional teams in Scotland by holding up SRtRC Red Cards prior to kick off at one of their matches.
