Following the reports over the weekend, Show Racism the Red Card would like to issue this statement
"The use of blackface is an out-of-date practice which is rarely seen these days demonstrating that public attitudes have long since moved on.
Show Racism the Red Card has addressed the practice of blackface throughout our 18-year-history as an education charity and has never labelled any individual or group as ‘racist’ because of the ‘tradition’.
That said, we have always attempted to explain why such practices are potentially offensive, irrespective of the intention to cause offense.
We were pleased to see the apology from Liam Williams over the weekend and accept there was no intention or malice from him.
However, this incident again highlights the need for everyone involved in sport to discuss such sensitive issues and we will continue to work with schools, teachers and sports clubs through our education programme”
