October is Black History Month in the UK
October is Black History Month (BHM) in the UK. You can keep up to date with BHM events nationally and in your region through the excellent Black History Month website.
The website also has some interesting features to read, including the contribution of Black men and women to Britain in the First World War. This is a particular theme of BHM in 2014, as the country commemorates the 100 year anniversary of the start of WW1.
BHM was first established in the UK in 1987 thanks to the efforts Akyaaba Addai-Sebo and Greater London Council. It is an important initiative that seeks to redress the imbalance of historical perspectives. In America, BHM takes place in February and was established as a month long initiative in 1970.
Show Racism the Red Card will be delivering educational work in many schools throughout the UK during October and educational events at football clubs. The campaign will be raising awareness about Black History Month during this time and encouraging young people to get involved in events and research.
