Southend United FC

Show Racism the Red Card travelled to Roots Hall Stadium, Southend, for an excellent full day event with Southend United FC

Organised in conjunction with Southend United Education and Community Trust, 90 Year 5 and 6 pupils from Southend schools were able to attend, take part in a series of workshops from SRtRC and Southend United CET and in the afternoon see a screening of the SRtRC film and put their questions on racism to a panel of special guests.

The pupils from St Mary’s and St Helen’s Primary Schools took part in a workshop examining stereotypes from SRtRC, a workshop focussing on the Respect campaign from Southend United CET and were also able to take in a tour of the Roots Hall Stadium.

The film screening in the afternoon gave the young people even more ammunition for a brilliant Q&A. Four of the club’s first team players were able to attend and answer questions, Julian Bennett, Barry Corr, Mark Laird and Anthony Straker. Former professional footballer and SRtRC Honorary Patron, Clint Easton completed the panel.

The young people were keen to hear of players personal experiences in and out of the game and all of the panellists offered excellent advice on how to deal with racism.

There were prizes for the panel’s favourite questions of the afternoon, including signed SRtRC T-Shirts. All of the young people left with a SRtRC goody bag.

Many thanks to Southend United CET and Southend United FC for organising the day and we look forward to working with the club again in the near future.
