Brilliant educational event with The Millers
Show Racism the Red Card and Rotherham United Community Sports Trust worked together to organise a full day educational event for Year 8 and 9 students from Rotherham schools.
The young people were able to take part in a series of workshops at the New York Stadium in the morning. SRtRC delivered a workshop that looked at stereotypes and how they are formed, Rotherham United Community Sports Trust ran a session based on the ‘Rewind’ resources and local project and the third workshop slot was filled by a tour of the stadium.
The pupils participated readily in the morning sessions, which seemed to provide some great inspiration for the Question and Answer session later in the afternoon.
First, however, the audience were able to see a screening of the SRtRC DVD and hear from role-models and others about their experiences of racism and advice on what to do if you experience or witness it.
The Q&A session which followed was lively and inspiring, with some excellent questions from the floor about both racism within sport and society and the historical roots of the issue. The questions were expertly fielded by former Chelsea, Feyenoord Southampton and Huddersfield player and SRtRC Honorary Patron, Ken Monkou and Chief Executive of Rotherham United FC, Paul Douglas.
After a thought provoking 25 minutes, the panel had the difficult job of choosing their favourite questions. The top three received Show Racism the Red Card T-Shirts and the panel’s favourite of the day received a Rotherham United FC ball, signed by the whole squad.
It was great to see the young people enjoy the day and be keen to get autographs from Ken and Paul at the end. Show Racism the Red Card would like to thank the club, Community Sports Trust and the schools for making the event such a success. We look forward to another great event with The Millers soon!
