The Show Racism the Red Card Wales team travelled to Aberystwyth to deliver a full day of training to the teachers of tomorrow
The day began with an introduction delivered by Education Manager, Simon Richards where the students had the opportunity to discuss the legal definition of a racist incident and issues surrounding it.
The students were then treated to an inspirational and passionate presentation on the real life experiences of racism lead by ex-professional footballer and TV personality, Leroy Roseinor.
Later, education worker Chris Stokes led a terminology workshop that aimed to improve the trainee teachers understanding of the correct use of words. This gave the students an opportunity to find out why certain words were unacceptable and acceptable as well as an explanation on the historical use of some of the terms. The students were able to ask questions as well as share recent experiences of the use of words in the classroom.
The teachers of tomorrow were introduced to some of the resources that are used by the team in their anti-racism sessions and were given tips on how to deliver their own workshops. There was also a chance for the trainee’s to have a go at some of the activities and interactive games that the SRTRC Wales Education team use in schools.
Finally, the day ended with an afternoon drama workshop run by Theatre Forum Cymru. The group showcased some real life scenarios with racist incidents and asked the trainees to step in at certain points and deal with the issues presented. This was a fantastic opportunity for the Trainees to experiment with different approaches to the issues in a safe environment. It also allowed for very interesting discussions about various teaching methods around this issues
The feedback from the day was excellent:
“In comparison to other events held during the year this has easily been one of the best”
“All areas of the day were really good, best professional studies lectures we’ve had!”
