Show Racism the Red Card’s Paul Mortimer delivers an impassioned speech at launch event
A new report from the Liberal Democrats was launched in London on Saturday 1st June. The report is focussed on race equality in education and employment and has made 30 recommendations.
Show Racism the Red Card welcomes the report and strongly supports the recommendations that attempts to weaken the Equality Act should be opposed, that teacher training should be improved in order to equip teachers to deal with issues of race and ethnicity and help them identify unconscious bias; and that young people should receive a more diverse curriculum which properly reflects the ethnic diversity of the country.
The Lib Dem race equality taskforce was set up in 2012 to identify measures to tackle inequality, discrimination and under-representation affecting Black, Asian and other minority ethnic communities and individuals. Members of the taskforce include Baroness Meral Hussein-Ece, Baroness Floella Benjamin, Lewisham Councillor Duwayne Brooks and Lester Holloway.
Paul shared his and his families experiences of racism and stop and search and stressed the importance of education and of turning ideas into action. Alongside Paul, Vince Cable, Duwayne Brookes, Rob Berkeley, Wilf Sullivan and Gus John spoke at the launch event.
At the moment the recommendations from the report are not Liberal Democrat policy, but we hope that the party will take these recommendations on and that other political parties follow suit and push race equality up the agenda.
