Ex-foreign secretary David Miliband has resigned from the board of Sunderland football club over new head coach Paolo Di Canio's "past political statements".
In a statement posted on his website Miliband said: "I wish Sunderland AFC all success in the future. It is a great institution that does a huge amount for the north-east, and I wish the team very well over the next vital seven games. However, in the light of the new manager's past political statements, I think it right to step down."
Mr Miliband had been serving as the club's vice-chairman and as a non-executive director.
Show Racism the Red Card fully understand and support David Miliband's stance given Paulo Di Canio's past political statements.
Whilst not a party political organisation, SRtRC has always welcomed the support David Miliband has shown for our campaign.
Sunderland AFC have fully supported SRtRC since 1996 and are one of the best clubs in the UK in terms of their all round support. SRtRC will continue to work closely with Sunderland AFC to spread our anti-racism message and to build further on the excellent work we have undertaken together in the last 17 years.
