The Show Racism the Red Card team visited the Emirates Stadium on Thursday 28th February. Young people from Laycock and Montem Primary Schools came to the stadium for an all day event in partnership with Arsenal FC and Islington Council. The event got underway with a ground tour, organised by the club, and a carousel of anti-racism workshops, which focused on exploring stereotypes, defining racism and learning about how to deal with racism.
In the afternoon, the young people watched the brand new Show Racism the Red Card DVD featuring top professional footballers, before posing questions on racism to a panel comprising of Arsenal legend Paul Davis, Deputy General Secretary of the PFA Bobby Barnes, Chelsea ladies star Drew Spence, comedian Ava Vidal and ex-professional footballers and SRtRC staff members Clint Easton, Osei Sankofa and Paul Mortimer. We were also delighted to be joined by Theo Van Seggelen and Tony Higgins from Fifpro, the world players' union, who co-sponsored the event.
All of the young people left with a goody bag of Show Racism the Red Card’s resources including a SRtRC magazine and signed football team poster, whilst one lucky young person won match day tickets, kindly donated by Arsenal, for his excellent contribution.
Over the last three years Islington Borough Council has supported Show Racism the Red Card to deliver a programme of anti-racism workshops alongside fun football fitness sessions delivered by ex-professional footballers in schools throughout the borough and we were really pleased to be joined by Tim Spafford from the council, who opened the afternoon.
Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis said: “We are delighted to host the Show Racism the Red Card event at Emirates Stadium and work with the campaign to educate young people. The Club wholeheartedly embraces equality and diversity through the Arsenal for Everyone initiative and we are delighted to support the campaign’s anti-racism message.”
Massive thanks to Arsenal FC, particularly for all of their hard work in helping us to organise and put on the day, to Paul Davis, Bobby Barnes, Ava Vidal and Drew Spence for supporting the day and to Fifpro and Islington Council for sponsoring the event.
