Vice-president of AC Milan causes outrage in Italy
"There has to be a willingness to confront the problem of racism in society and sport and real leadership is desperately needed to achieve a change.”
Paul Kearns, Deputy Chief Executive, Show Racism the Red Card
The Guardian reports that AC Milan’s Vice-President, Paolo Berlusconi, described Mario Balotelli as “the family’s little nigger”.
Video footage of the incident, which took place at a political rally in Italy, is available and has caused outrage in the Country. This latest event highlights a recurring problem in Italy with racism, following on from the recent incident where Kevin Prince-Boateng and team-mates playing for AC Milan left the pitch due to racist chanting.
Paul Kearns, SRtRC Deputy Chief Executive said “Show Racism the Red Card is appalled and fully condemns Paolo Berlusconi’s language towards Mario Balotelli, (who is) effectively his employee.
"This exceptionally unfortunate incident comes at a crucial time, given the ongoing problems with racism in Italian football.
"The way that people at the event he spoke at reacted to the things he said, indicates an acceptance of this kind of language in mainstream politics there, which is extremely worrying.
There has to be a willingness to confront the problem of racism in society and sport and real leadership is desperately needed to achieve a change.”
