Secondary One pupils from St John’s RC High School attended Dundee United FC on Wednesday 19 December 2012 for a Show Racism the Red Card event organised in partnership with Dundee United FC and the ArabTRUST.
The event featured three educational workshops in the morning promoting messages of equality and respect, and the pupils also received a stadium tour.
During the afternoon session Show Racism the Red Card’s brand new anti-racism educational film was screened, which features some of the game’s greatest players; Thierry Henry, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Didier Drogba.
Guests on the day included Dundee United FC Captain Jon Daly and first team player Sean Dillon, ex- professionals and Show Racism the Red Card coaches Michael Weir and Steven Bell, Amilia Hall – Quality Improvement Officer, Dundee City Council, along with Stewart Hosie MP and various Councillors from the local area. The guests spoke about their experiences of racism and sectarianism and offered advice on how to deal with, and combat, racism and sectarianism whenever it occurs.
Jon Daly, Dundee United FC Captain said:
"Sport brings people together regardless of race and we should always look to promote this positive aspect. In football, you meet people from all walks of life and there should be no toleration of any form of discrimination. Football is the global game and it unites players and supporters the world over. As the proud captain of Dundee United Football Club I am delighted to show both my team mates and my own personal support to the Show Racism the Red Card campaign. United we can eradicate all discrimination from our lives."
A representative from the ArabTRUST said:
“ArabTRUST are united against racism. We have a long history of campaigning against such prejudice alongside Show Racism the Red Card which we feel is a hugely worthwhile cause that has always had our full support.
“We feel that racism in all forms is unacceptable in a modern society. We are dedicated to helping eradicate it from not only football, but in society too.
“ArabTRUST are proud to support such an initiative and reaffirm the message that such prejudice will not be tolerated on the terraces, or anywhere for that matter. We thank Show Racism the Red Card for allowing us to stand alongside them in a continuation of the association between the two organisations.”
