This season our Welsh office have implemented a new element to their club events which sees the pupils taking on the role of media journalists
The new element added this season to our events in Wales sets a task to the young people attending the clubs across Wales, by steeping into the role of a newspaper journalist.
Prior to the event the pupils complete tasks in their school in preparation for attending the event with the club. They are required to research racism both in sport and society and take notes of recent incidents and issues in the world.
Many schools have brought newspapers into the classroom and visited websites and blogs online to investigate how articles are designed and written.
Using this information and knowledge the pupils create a name to their own newspaper and prepare some questions to ask the players and special guests during the question and answer session of the event.
During the event pupils have the opportunity to take notes during the educational workshop and when watching the DVD. Some schools have even designed their own reporter’s notepads and assigned a pupil as the schools official photographer to take photos during the event.
During the Question and Answer session the pupils have the opportunity to ask questions to the players about racism in sport and society and take down the responses of the players to include in their articles.
After the event back at school, the pupils take all what they have learnt, along with the research notes and then design and write an article on their experience of the event and about the topic of racism.
The new idea has been tested in the first few events of this season and has so far seen positive reviews from both teachers and pupils.
Teachers have highlighted how well it links in with the curriculum and that it adds even more of an educational impact on the event and the young people.
Campaign Worker Jason Webber said “The main benefit we have found is that it ensures that after the event the young people continue to learn about racism and it enthuses them to be invovled in exploring racism further. It also highlights what they have learnt from our event and educational workshop, and shows the impact we have had on their education and understanding.”
