As part of Show Racism the Red Card’s new partnership with East Dunbartonshire Council, primary seven pupils from St Agatha’s, St Flannan’s and Oxgang Primary Schools attended Partick Thistle FC on Thursday 01 November for a Show Racism the Red Card educational event.
The event promoted equality for all, and was organised in partnership with East Dunbartonshire Council and Partick Thistle FC. The young people in attendance participated in a carousel of engaging workshops throughout the morning, which considered the dangers of racism and sectarianism and presented an opportunity for the young people to offer their views on these topical and pertinent issues.
During the afternoon session Show Racism the Red Card screened their brand new anti-racism educational film, which features some of the game’s greatest players; Thierry Henry, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Didier Drogba.
Guests on the day included Partick Thistle FC first team players - Alan Archibald, Aaron Muirhead and Scott Fox, ex-professional and Show Racism the Red Card coaches Derek Ferguson, Gary MacKay, Michael Weir and Steven Bell, along with representatives from East Dunbartonshire Council. The guests spoke about their experiences of racism and sectarianism and offered advice on how to deal with, and combat, racism and sectarianism whenever it occurs.
The partnership with East Dunbartonshire Council involves Show Racism the Red Card’s Community Education team and current and ex-professional football coaches visiting East Dunbartonshire schools delivering important educational workshops on the subjects of anti-racism and anti-sectarianism. In addition to this a programme of Continuing Professional Development training, tackling racism and promoting race equality will be targeted at educational professionals throughout the local authority over the current school year.
Convener of Education at East Dunbartonshire Council, Councillor Eric Gotts said: "Children and young people in East Dunbartonshire are always keen to get involved with initiatives that tackle racism and sectarianism and this event held by Show Racism the Red Card was a great opportunity for some of our pupils to find out more about this pertinent issue.
"The full and varied programme ensured everyone came away from the event with a greater awareness of the dangers of racism and sectarianism and how to tackle the issue both on and off the pitch."
Amanda Peebles, Show Racism the Red Card said:
“Partick Thistle FC is a great supporter of Show Racism the Red Card through their participation at our educational events with young people, their anti-racism / anti-sectarianism action throughout our annual Fortnight of Action and participation in our annual poster campaign.
“This kind of work equips young people to deal with racist and sectarian attitudes and behaviours. The young people from East Dunbartonshire schools we have engaged with through our partnership are very positive about it.
“The continued invaluable support received from football clubs and current and former professional footballers and managers for these events is having a tremendously positive impact on the young people attending.
“The event was a great success and we would like to thank all involved.”
