Keshet UK trains the student leadership of the Jewish community (UJS), supporting their volunteers to tackle homophobia
Report by David Brown, Keshet UK
Homophobia: Let's Tackle It is a very engaging and useful resource for raising issues of homophobia with young people that speaks to them in ways that don't patronise and through personalities they can relate too. When running sessions in schools, we will find this resource valuable for addressing homophobia. In particular, the DVD skillfully handles the ways homophobia affects all young people and those in situations where it is still seems problematic such as sport. I was particular moved by the story of the young person who was forced to withdraw from PE for four years after an attack on their kit and her teacher's feeble response.
The accompanying resources provide excellent tips and guidance for working with groups around these issues and link these short films with curriculum, law and policy that equip educators with a solid basis for doing this work. Personally, I found it positive that although the DVD addressed homophobia on its own terms, it also places this within the larger picture of combating all forms of discrimination and creating positive environments for all young people to become the people they are and achieve their potential.
