Canaries Show Racism the Red Card
Show Racism the Red Card were lucky enough to be able to team up with Norwich City FC Study Support Centre to organise an event for over 100 young people from Norwich schools at Carrow Road Stadium.
The Canaries are having a great season in the Premiership and this was reflected in the level of excitement from the audience as they arrived for a 2 hour event that included educational activities, a screening of the DVD and Q&A session with some very special guests.
The Year 5, 6 and 7 audience participated well in the educational activities and were happy to share their thoughts during the session. The interactive activities included group work and looked at interactive activities included group work and looked at stereotypes, judging people and a definition of racism and the forms it takes.
Following the educational activities the young people watched a screening of the SRtRC DVD which may have inspired some of the questions in the Q&A which followed.
The special guests for the panel included Norwich City FC first team players Elliott Bennett & Jonathan Howson. The young people were very keen to ask them questions on their experiences both in and out of football with racism. There was quite a variety of questions reflecting how much thought the young people had put into them. The panel’s favourite questions were awarded a SRtRC t-shirt and mini football which the players were happy to sign. Norwich City's report about the event can be viewed here.
All of the audience were able to take away signed Norwich City player cards and a SRtRC goody bag containing a copy of the new Red Card magazine. SRtRC would like to thank Norwich City FC and the Study Support Centre for all their help in organising the event, particularly Paul Wickens and Katie Stone. We will look forward to the next trip to Carrow Road for another excellent event!
