Club and Council join forces to support educational event
Show Racism the Red Card returned to the Lakeside Suite at the Keepmoat Stadium for an event organised in conjunction with Doncaster Rovers Community Sports & Education Foundation and Doncaster Council.
Young people from local primary schools were able to come to the stadium for an afternoon of educational activities, a screening of the SRtRC DVD and a Question and Answer session with very special guests. Two of the Doncaster Rovers players Neil Sullivan and George Friend would later join the panel to take questions from the young people along with former professional footballer and current SRtRC coach Olivier Bernard.
The Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies would also be on the panel later in the afternoon. The Mayor officially opened the event and spoke in support of the campaign and made it clear that there was no room for racism in
The Year 5&6 pupils from 4 Doncaster Primary Schools then participated in some activities run by SRtRC that looked at stereotypes and judging people before getting to know them, a definition of racism and discussed terminology.
Following on from the activities, the audience were able to see a screening of the SRtRC DVD which features interviews with professional footballers talking about their experiences of racism in sport and society and offering their advice. The young people were certainly engaged by it and it provided some more ideas for the Question and Answer session that followed.
The panel responded really well to the young people’s questions, sharing their personal experiences and offering some thoughtful advice. The panel’s favourite questions were awarded a SRtRC T-Shirt and mini-football signed by the players.
Everyone who attended the event was rewarded for their excellent participation with a family voucher for the next Doncaster Rovers FC home fixture against
SRtRC would like to thank the Neil, George, Olivier and The Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies for their participation and the schools and teachers who brought their pupils to the event. Big thanks to Doncaster Council and Doncaster Rovers Community Sports & Education Foundation for their support of the event. Thanks in particular to Wayne Galloway and John Leask for their help in organising the event.
