200 Young People attend event at The Britannia Stadium
Show Racism the Red Card returned to the Britannia Stadium for an event with Stoke City FC organised in conjunction with Stoke City Football in the Community (FITC). Stoke City FITC invited Year 5 & Year 6 pupils from Ash Green, Herons Cross, Newstead and Sandford Hill Primary Schools to the Tony Waddington Suite at the stadium to take part in an afternoon of fun and educational activities.
This included a screening of the SRtRC DVD and a Question and Answer session on racism with very special guests: Stoke City FC player, Ryan Shotton and former professional footballer and current SRtRC coach Olivier Bernard.
The first part of the event saw the young people take part in some educational activities that included a look at judging people before we get to know them and the formation of stereotypes, a definition of racism and a look at terminology. The audience of over 200 young people really engaged in the activities and made some great contributions. The session got the young people thinking about racism before seeing the DVD.
Following the DVD, the audience were able to put their questions to Olivier about racism and he shared with them his own experiences of receiving racism and advice. Ryan Shotton joined the panel to answer more questions and readily shared his own experiences of racism and shared with us how his friends had helped to challenge it and support him.
Stoke City FITC provided some great prizes for the panel’s favourite questions. A SCFC football signed by the whole first team for the first prize and a match program from the recent Europa league fixture for the runner-up. SRtRC also provided t-shirts and mini-footballs for the favourite question and runners-up which Ryan was happy to sign. SCFC FITC had also provided autograph cards for Ryan to sign for the audience and a SRtRC goody bag was given to everyone that included the new magazine.
There was press coverage from local radio, newspaper and This is Staffordshire.
SRtRC would like to thank Stoke City FC for hosting this event and their support of the campaign. Particular thanks must go to Steve Hunt of the Stoke City Football in the Community department for all his help in organising the event. We look forward to working with the club in the future.
SRtRC would also like to thank our sponsors, the Premier League/PFA Community Fund. This event was the first in an exciting new series of events this year, more dates can be found in our Forthcoming Events.
