Gary Dobson and David Norris found guilty of Stephen Lawrence's Murder
In the light of new forensic evidence, Gary Dobson and David Norris have been convicted of the racist murder of Stephen Lawrence. Dobson will serve a minimum of 15 years and two months and Norris will serve 14 years and three months.
Stephen was 17 when he was murdered by a group of white youths as he waited for a bus in 1993. Stephen had no connection with a gang or any history or violence. He did not know his killers and his killers did not know him. The young people who attacked him first hurled racist abuse and then attacked him solely because of the colour of his skin.
Show Racism the Red Card would like to send a message of support to the Lawrence family - our thoughts are with them as they finally see a result following many years of campaigning for justice.
Since their son’s death, Doreen and Neville Lawrence have campaigned tirelessly to combat racism in society and their determination has led to several important changes in the way that racism is dealt with; including an acceptance of the existence of institutional racism and of the need for institutions to take a proactive approach to tackling racism and promoting equality, rather than simply responding to incidents when they occur. Doreen was inducted into our Hall of Fame in September 2011 for the work that she has done with the Show Racism the Red Card campaign.
