Young People enjoyed a full day of activities at Brunton Park
Show Racism the Red Card returned to Brunton Park for an all day event with young people from Norman Street and Yewdale Primary Schools. The campaign teamed up with Carlisle United’s Football in the Community department to organise the event and deliver educational workshops and fun football sessions for the Year 5&6 pupils.
SRtRC ran 2 educational workshops for each group and CUFC FITC took the young people to the indoor training facilities at the stadium for the football sessions. The SRtRC workshops looked at stereotypes and prejudice, a definition of racism, SRtRC also discussed with the young people some examples of racism, got their thoughts on terminology and explored their understanding of racism.
Following the workshops in the morning and the lunch-break, the schools came back together to watch a screening of the SRtRC DVD. The young people had been informed that they would have the opportunity to put their questions on racism to a panel of special guests following the DVD. The panel included three players from Carlisle United FC: Adam Collin, Lubomir Michalik and James Berrett and former professional footballer and current SRtRC coach and education worker, Olivier Bernard.
The young people did not disappoint, putting some excellent and well thought out questions to the panel. SRtRC had three sets of special goody bags for the best questions of the day containing SRtRC t-shirts, mini-footballs and wristbands. The panel dealt well with all of the questions and reinforced the learning from the morning session.
All of the young people who attended were able to get a new SRtRC / CUFC poster signed by the panel and a SRtRC goody bag including the new magazine. The event received some good press coverage with ITV Border news filming at the event and interviewing Olivier Bernard after the event.
SRtRC would like to thank Carlisle United FC for hosting the event and particularly the CUFC Football in the Community department and John Halpin for their help in organising the event. The campaign team look forward to returning to Carlisle next season!
