Blaydon MP Dave Anderson has tabled an Early Day Motion in Parliament to show his support for anti racism campaigners and his constituents
Blaydon MP Dave Anderson has tabled an Early Day Motion in Parliament to show his support for anti-racism campaigners and his constituents who have voiced dismay and anger at remarks made by FIFA president Sepp Blatter. The EDM calls for the resignation of the out of touch president.
That this House condemns the unacceptable and offensive nature of remarks made by the FIFA president, Sepp Blatter; recognises that his comments have attracted condemnation both from anti racism campaigners and from all sections of this house; further believes that the comments made by Blatter on racism in football, have made his position untenable and that world football needs new leadership; recognises he is in conflict with FIFA’s policy of zero tolerance and this conduct demonstrates the current president has no understanding of what racism is, the ideology behind it, the damage it causes and how it subjugates one group of people as inferior; it further confirms that enlightened leadership at this level is needed and a clear message delivered that racism is not a minor matter and cannot be dismissed and trivialised; and therefore this house calls on Sepp Blatter to resign with immediate effect.
Mr Anderson is a lifelong football fan and a passionate supporter of ‘Show Racism the Red Card’. The MP for Blaydon said, "I have worked with SRtRC for 15 years and seen the great strides they - and football - have made in recent years. I have been privileged to see firsthand what a great impact their work with young people is making. It makes a huge contribution in ensuring our next generation doesn't treat racism in the same casual way that mine did. It is deplorable that the man who leads World football can be so unaware of the huge responsibility he has and the damage his attitude could do. FIFA, rightly, has zero tolerance of racism and it cannot be led by someone who thinks that it is OK to brush it away with a handshake. He has to go and go now. I am confident that my EDM will be very well supported by MPs and the public. I am heartened by the show of support I have received on this issue, from members across the House and from all political parties and I will be asking that all MPs sign the EDM and show their support."
Show Racism the Red Card call for Sepp Blatter to resign and hope our Early Day Motion will be well supported by MP's.
