Tomasz Cywka joined us at Pride Park to support the message of Show Racism the Red Card
Show Racism the Red Card was delighted to re-new our partnerships with Derby County FC, Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council at this event. The councils and the football club again got behind the anti-racism message to create a fun and informative 2 hour event for pupils from Derbyshire County Council and Derby City Council schools.
To kick the event off Councillor Mike Longden, Cabinet Member for Education at Derbyshire County Council officially opened the event with a short and supportive speech.
Christian Roberts the former professional footballer and current SRtRC coach and education worker had travelled from Wales to take part in the event and lead the educational activities in the workshop. The young people engaged with Christian and readily took part in the activities which examined a definition of racism; cultures and looked at terminology.
Following on from the educational activities, the SRtRC film was introduced and screened. The audience paid close attention to the film and the panel were looking forward to taking their questions in the Q&A that followed.
Joining Christian on the panel was Derby County FC player Tomasz Cywka. This was Tomasz’s second SRtRC event and it was great to have him on the panel again. The panel was completed by the Mayor of Derby Councillor Les Allen and Chris Tilley, Assistant Director of Education at Derbyshire County Council.
The young people asked some brilliant questions of the panel, who were all happy to share their experiences and offer advice to the young people. SRtRC had some prizes for the panel’s favourite questions for the afternoon. The campaign had two runners-up prizes of SRtRC T-Shirts, mini-footballs and wristbands, while the two favourite questions received the SRtRC goodies and 2x match tickets and passes for the Pedigree Suite for a DCFC home game.
The event was officially closed by the Mayor of Derby, Cllr Les Allen. Cllr Allen spoke to the audience about some incidents of racism he had come across over the years and in support of the event.
All of the audience were able to take away a copy of the new SRtRC / DCFC poster signed by Tomasz and a SRtRC goody bag containing the new SRtRC magazine.
The event received some excellent press coverage from ITV Central East news, footage was broadcast on the evening news. The event was also covered by local radio, the club’s programme and the Express and Star newspaper.
Show Racism the Red Card would like to thank Derby County FC for hosting the event and donating prizes for the young people, particularly Richard Astle and Simon Carnall. Big thanks also to Derby City Council and Derbyshire County Council for their support and sponsoring the event and poster. Particular thanks to Brian Cavanagh, Chris Tilley and Ann Webster.
