Show Racism the Red Card delivered workshops to two North Tyneside Schools in the Council Chamber
22 year 5 pupils from Percy Main Primary School
30 year 5 pupils from Shiremoor Primary School
North Tyneside Council Chamber was host to the Show Racism the Red Card event on Monday 7th November, a fun packed afternoon was had by year 5 from Percy Main and Shiremoor primary Schools.
First up was Craig Bankhead, the North East Education Manager who welcomed the schools and councillors attending and introduced a short DVD explaining all about the campaign. Show Racism the Red Card Coach and ex-Newcastle United Player Olivier Bernard then got all the young people and adults minds and bodies moving with a game of do this not that! Once everyone was suitably awake the children then took part in an anti-racism workshop delivered by Lizz Bennett and Laura Pidcock the young people explored stereotypes and then watched the SRtRC DVD.
The workshop was followed by a Q&A Panel; the young people had an opportunity to ask questions about racism to the panel of ex-professions footballers and SRtRC coaches John Anderson, Olivier Bernard, Gary Bennett and Trevor Benjamin. The best questions won a prize of a SRtRC football, t-shirt pin badge and a wristband, all young people left with a SRtRC, stickers, magazine and a signed Newcastle poster.
At the end of the event the children were asked if they were going to help get rid of racism in society, if they agreed they had to shout Show Racism the Red Card........ I am sure they heard the response throughout the building. Well done kids!
Huge thanks to North Tyneside Council for the use of their council chamber and everyone else involved!
