Former Newcastle United defender is recognised for his anti-racism work
Anderson received his award on the pitch during half-time of Sunday's season finale against his former club West Bromwich Albion. It was presented to him by two other former Magpies stars, Peter Beardsley and Olivier Bernard.
The North East-based anti-racism education charity honours former professional football players who have worked with the campaign to help tackle racism in society. Visit our Hall of Fame section to see the other recipients of this award.
Former Republic of Ireland International Anderson, who played for Newcastle United throughout the 1980s and in the early 90s, has worked with Show Racism the Red Card in delivering anti-racism education in the North East's schools for many years.
Show Racism the Red Card chief executive, Ged Grebby, said: "Professional football players are seen as role models and young people really listen to what they have to say.
"John's commitment to the campaign is something that we would like to formally recognise and what better place to do it than on the pitch at St James' Park where John played for so many years."
The charity's Education team work throughout the North East, and last year delivered anti-racism workshops to more than 13,000 youngsters throughout the region. The North East education team consists of four full time staff members and six former professional football players who visit schools and organise events in football clubs.
Anderson said: "The guys at Show Racism the Red Card are a great team to work with and we do loads of work with kids up and down the North East. It really is an honour to receive this award from them."
