18 years after Stephen's death, two men will face a jury in November charged with his murder
The court of appeal have ruled last week that Gary Dobson will be re-trialed for Stephen Lawrence's murder, following new forensic evidence linking him to the crime. He will stand trial with David Norris who was a suspect in the original trial but was never charged.
Show Racism the Red Card are pleased to hear of this ruling and hope to see justice in the case.
Stephen's parents have been fighting for justice for their son for almost two decades. They have been dedicated to securing justice for the victims of racially motivated crime and police misconduct. The vigorous campaign following Stephen’s murder resulted in a public inquiry which led to publication of the Stephen Lawrence Enquiry by Lord Macpherson. This made 70 recommendations and brought about a fundamental change in UK law.
On hearing the ruling, Doreen said:
"I'm really emotional now. I'm really pleased by the judgment that happened this morning. It's been a long time in coming, but we still have a long way to go. At this moment in time, all I can think about is Stephen and that perhaps, somewhere down the line, we will get justice for him. It's been a long time for us to get to this position."
As a prominent anti-racism campaigner and activist, Doreen has participated in some of Show Racism the Red Card's events over the past year in her capacity as director of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust. Doreen Lawrence OBE founded the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust in order to promote a positive community legacy in her son's name.
All at Show Racism the Red Card send our thoughts to Doreen and her family. We hope that after so many years of fighting for justice, this ruling will mean that those who were responsible for Stephen's murder are finally held to account.
