Show Racism the Red Card hosted a fundraising Comedy Gig at Customs House, South Shields
Over 200 people attended a Stand Up Against Racism night at the Customs House. The fundraising event featured five top comedians in the region - all offering to perform on the night to show their commitment to the fight against racism.
Judging by the laughter on the night and the feedback afterwards, we can happily report that the event was a huge success!
"I had a hilarious night at the
The Show Racism the Red Card team spoke at the beginning of the evening about the campaign and the importance of the work we do to tackle racism within the North East and country as a whole. Although the night was set up to be entertaining (and achieved this aim!), it was really worthwhile to spend a few minutes with the audience and get our anti-racism message across.
"Thanks so much for a great night!! I really enjoyed it... If you're able to come into my school, even just for an assembly, please let me know - your aims are exactly what some of our kids need to hear!" - Claire, teacher and audience member
Anvil Springstien closed his set by talking about his own experiences of racism and made a plea to the audience:
"It's really important to support Show Racism the Red Card. I think the North East is an amazing and cosmopolitan place to live. It is only like this because there are so many people who are dedicated to fighting against racism and rejecting fascism. We must keep up this fight and not become complacent. Thank you all for coming this evening - please do all you can to continue to support this fantastic cause."
Mark Rough spoke to us after the event, saying:
"It was a great night and I hope you were happy with the turn out and response. I've been involved in anti-racist campaigning since I was 14 and if I can do my bit by getting up onstage and playing the fool for 20 minutes then so be it! Keep fighting the fight and keep me up to date with your future events, I'd love to be involved."
Show Racism the Red Card would like to thank all of the performers for their magnificent support of the campaign. Huge thanks to Potts Printers, Unison and David Gray Solicitors for sponsoring the event and for their ongoing support.
Students from Gateshead College filmed the event, look out for highlights on our Stand Up Against Racism YouTube channel soon!
