In the Sunderland Civic Centre Council Chamber, The Show Racism the Red Card team provided an afternoon of fun and anti-racist education to local young people

The afternoon was opened by the Deputy Leader of the Council, Florence Anderson, who gave a touching account of her long relationship with the campaign and continuing support. Up next was an amazing performance from Newpenshaw Primary, a local school who had recently received a workshop from the SRtRC team, the pupils gave a creative performance including drama, role-play, presentation and handmade leaflets that demonstrated their engagement with campaign and their understanding of racism.

Next all of the young people viewed the SRtRC DVD which was extremely well received and increased the pupils knowledge and awareness of the dangers of racism, leading onto  a Q&A session with a panel of guests including, SRtRC football coaches Curtis Fleming, Gary Bennett, Dean Gordon and Trevor Benjamin. Also on the panel were current Newcastle United Women’s FC Captain, Sarah Wilson and current Sunderland Women’s FC players Stephanie Bannon and Beck Salicki.

The children with the best questions were awarded with Sunderland match tickets, a SRtRC Football and t-shirt.  All children who asked a question also received a SRtRC football.  Pupils from all three schools left with a SRtRC goody bag and Sunderland posters signed by the wonderful panel. One young person also won our spot prize of Sunderland Match tickets by finding the lucky red card under their table!

Well done to all of our prize winners and all of the young people who participated in the event,  and a huge thanks to everyone involved that made the event possible!
