SRtRC team up with the Carling Cup winners for educational event with Year 5&6 pupils
Year 5&6 pupils from Old Know Junior, Moor Green Combined, Hodge Hill Primary, York Mead Primary and Cottesbrooke Junior Schools visited St Andrew’s Stadium to take part in the latest Show Racism the Red Card educational event with Birmingham City FC.
The young people were excited to be visiting the home of the new holders of the Carling Cup, where they had the opportunity to put their questions on racism to a panel featuring:
David Bentley – England international midfielder who began his career with Arsenal FC. He has also played for Norwich City FC and Blackburn Rovers FC and joined Tottenham Hotspur in 2008. David has been a Birmingham City FC player since January, joining on loan from Spurs until the end of the season. In his first game for the Blues against local rivals Aston Villa he was named man of the match.
Christian Roberts - Christian is a former professional footballer who played in an attacking midfield role and began his career with Cardiff City. Christian moved to Exeter City in 2000 and scored 18 goals in 79 appearances, which led to Bristol City signing him. After 94 appearances for Bristol City he then moved to Swindon Town, appearing over 110 times and scoring 21 goals. Christian now works for SRtRC delivering football coaching in schools in Wales and the South West
The young people saw a screening of the SRtRC DVD and took part in educational activities run by Christian ahead of the Q&A session. The Q&A session saw David and Christian handle all the questions very well, imparting some excellent advice to the audience. The panel’s favourite questions of the day will see three of the young people receive SRtRC T-Shirts and kit bags.
At the close of the event all of the young people were able to get David’s autograph on the SRtRC / Birmingham City FC poster and have photographs taken in school groups with him and the Carling Cup!
Many thanks to all at Birmingham City FC for their help in organising this event and support of the SRtRC campaign this season.
