Educational event with Stoke City FC at the Britannia Stadium
Show Racism the Red Card teamed up with Stoke City FC for the second season in a row to organise an educational event for young people from local schools. This event was funded by Stand Up Speak Up and was the third ‘Speak Out Against Racism’ event organised by the campaign this season. Stoke City FC’s Community Programme kindly arranged for the attendance of all of the young people on the day, even sending the SCFC double-decker bus to pick up one group! In all around 120 pupils were in attendance to take part in anti-racist education activities, see a screening of the SRtRC DVD and take part in a Q&A on racism with very special guests.
The young people readily joined in with the activities run by SRtRC in the first hour, looking at issues including defining and identifying racism and looking at different cultures and their impact on their lives. Following a short break the audience were able to watch the SRtRC film and think of some questions for a panel which included SCFC player Salif Diao, former professional footballer and SRtRC coach Curtis Fleming and Councillor Ruth Rosenau from Stoke City Council.
As an added incentive the best questions of the day were awarded SRtRC t-shirts and goody bags, while the panel’s ultimate favourite question was also awarded a SCFC football signed by the whole squad. There were some brilliant questions asked of the panel and Cllr Rosenau had a tough job picking the best ones.
All of the young people who attended were able to take home copies of the new Show Racism the Red Card / Stoke City FC poster signed by Salif and SRtRC goody bags. The event received some excellent media coverage, ITV Central came and filmed the event as well as interviewing Salif, Curtis and some of the young people about the day.
SRtRC would like to thank all who attended and participated in this event. Big thanks must go to Stoke City FC, Stoke City’s Community Programme and Steve Hunt in particular, for all of his help in organising the event. SRtRC look forward to working with the club in the future and continuing this excellent partnership.
