Show Racism the Red Card were welcomed to the home of The Shakers for an anti-racist educational event.
Young people from three local primary schools attended an anti-racist educational event at Bury Football Club: Hazelhurst, St Luke’s and Bury & Whitefield Primary School.
It was great to hear from Lyn Grant, Bury Curriculum and Language Access Service, who opened the event. Lyn has co-ordinated the SRtRC Schools Competition in Bury for the last seven years and we are hugely grateful for her support.
The young people took part in an interactive workshop where they learnt the definition of racism, how it can affect people and the role they can play in Showing Racism the Red Card. The young people were really engaged in the activities and it was fantastic to see them discussing the issues so passionately.
The second part of the session involved the screening of our Show Racism the Red Card DVD, followed by a question and answer session featuring special guests from the club – who are also patrons of the campaign. Assistant Manager Chris Brass and defender Efe Sodje received a standing ovation as they arrived at the event, accompanied by club mascot Robbie the Bobby! Chris and Efe were joined on the panel by SRtRC coach and former Newcastle United player Olivier Bernard.
The young people posed some excellent questions to the panel, who responded by sharing their experiences of racism and giving inspiring advice. Congratulations to Georgia, Shavase and Oliver who asked prize-winning questions and received a Show Racism the Red Card bag, t-shirt and ball. The top prize went to Oliver who also won a signed Bury football.
Show Racism the Red Card would like to thank Mike Morris and the staff at Bury FC Community Trust for all of their support in making the event possible; Lyn Grant for her ongoing support of the campaign and our patrons Efe Sodje and Chris Brass for their excellent contributions to the panel.
