Darren Bent's mother faced racial abuse from a Sunderland fan in Wigan
Behaviour of this kind is totally unacceptable to our football club
On Saturday 28th November, Darren Bent reported on Twitter: "So we get beaten by Wigan and my mum gets racially abused by a Sunderland fan". He went on to describe the event as "an absolute disgrace...I won't stand for that".
Sunderland AFC are currently liaising with Northumbria Police in order to investigate this matter and Greater Manchester Police are also appealing for witnesses to come forward.
A spokesperson at the club has said: "Behaviour of this kind is totally unacceptable to our football club".
Ged Grebby, Chief Executive of Show Racism the Red Card said:
"We at Show Racism the Red Card were saddened to hear about the racial abuse that Darren Bent's mother suffered. We fully support Darren and Sunderland Football Club's call to bring the perpetrator to justice.
This season has seen an increase in the number of racist incidents within football and this is an indication that football cannot be separated from society's problems. We at Show Racism the Red Card will re-double our efforts to combat racism in society through anti-racist education.
We look forward to working with Sunderland Football Club to continue the positive work we have done for many years in the city of Sunderland."
